Blind Aid
Support for Blind and Visually Impaired People in London
Blind Aid

BlindAid has over 175 years of experience of delivering emotional and practical support to blind and visually impaired people living in London.

Our enthusiastic team is dedicated to working alongside our Service Users offering friendly company and conversation as well as information and links to other useful organisations.   We aim to improve quality of life and to promote independence.

All our services are provided free of charge for our Service Users.

Our core service is Home Visiting; we also provide a Telephone Support Service and can offer Welfare Rights support for our Service Users. We are able to provide the long term loan of radio/audio equipment and may offer grants to support independent living.

We can provide support in 12 London Boroughs, including Wandsworth. Click here for a full list.

Home Visiting

BlindAid has an exceptional team of friendly and understanding Home Visitors that make regular visits to our 500+ Service Users to provide emotional support and practical help where possible.  We will visit people at home or in sheltered accommodation or residential/nursing homes.

The visiting service is free of charge.

We aim to provide visits that take place every two weeks and usually last about an hour,

A Home Visitor can help with such things as:

Warm and friendly conversation

Practical support – for example reading/writing correspondence

Providing information on what’s going on locally – for example: Social clubs; local outings and events;  leisure activities; lunch clubs  etc

Arranging the loan of audio equipment from the British Wireless for the Blind (subject to their criteria)

Our Visitors

All of our Home Visitors are paid members of staff who have been carefully selected, CRB checked, trained and all receive regular supervision.

Our Home Visitors take care to treat every service user as an individual.

Other Services

Telephone Support Service

A regular friendly telephone call offers an opportunity for a chat, advice, help and companionship over the phone.

Calls are made at a mutually convenient prearranged time. We aim to call each service user once a fortnight.  An average call lasts for around 20 minutes.

Radios & Audio Equipment

Listening to radio programmes, recorded music, talking books and podcasts make a huge difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people, especially those who live alone.

We can provide a radio/audio set on long term loan to any blind or partially sighted person who cannot afford to purchase their own equipment.

Welfare Rights Service

Many blind or partially sighted people live on low incomes, and therefore it is essential that they claim their full benefit entitlement.

In our experience many people do not claim all the benefits that they are entitled to.  BlindAids’ Welfare Rights Service offers a free benefits assessment Click here for more information.

BlindAid may make grants available to help blind and partially sighted people, on low incomes, to maintain independence and reduce isolation (subject to criteria and typically up to £300).

Grant applications should be made on behalf of the recipient by Social Services, Sensory Teams or other Charities.

All applications will be considered by our grant committee.
