FST - Lean on Me
one-to-one mentoring

Mentoring

What?

The Lean on Me Programme is a targeted one-to-one mentoring scheme provided by Future Skills Training (FST).

We aim to build relationships with young people who are excluded or at risk of exclusion from mainstream education through mentoring, enabling us to gain their trust and therefore opening the door for us to give them all the support needed.

Why?

The long term aim of Lean on Me is to aid the progression and re-integration of young people into education and employment alongside empowering them to find a positive role to play in society.

How?

This project uses the XLMentoring model developed by XLP. Mentors meet with their young people either weekly or fortnightly over a 12 month period (this can change) and engage in activities that are agreed together. This could be more discussion based to support a particular issue or work on applications and cv's, or could be more active, for example engaging in a sport or trip together to help socially develop the young person.

The mentoring is evaluated 3 times in that 12 month period (ending with an additional final review) reviewing a series of criteria under the headings 'Education and Self-confidence', 'Goals, Skills and Interests', and 'Community Relationships'.

Who?

The mentors offer objective, supportive assistance to help the young person overcome the issues and obstacles they are facing. We have both male and female mentors who consist of FST staff and volunteers.

Who are we?

FST is a charity based in Wandsworth, South London, that invests time in young people, enabling them to re-engage with education and employment.

We target young people aged between 11 and 19, who are excluded or at risk of exclusion from mainstream education, those that have offended or are at risk of offending, young people not in education, employment or training, and those socially marginalised. We seek to empower, support, care for and give hope to all the young people we encounter.

What do we do?

We provide a mix of educational and support services through a range of effective and targeted group activities and projects.
