what is telecare?

Telecare is a service made up of personal and environmental sensors that enable people to remain safe and independent in their own home for longer.


24 hour monitoring ensures that, should an event occur, the information is acted upon immediately and the most appropriate response put in place.


It is largely aimed at those who may not always be aware of their surroundings or risks to themselves but WATCH telecare is customisable to most individual’s situations.

Those who could benefit from the implementation of a telecare package include: those with learning difficulties or sensory impairment; individuals who are frail, have physical disabilities, limited mobility or are at risk of falling and others who live alone and are vulnerable or at risk.

how does it work?

A Telecare package can include an array of alarms and sensors, selected to best suit your needs.


These may include:


Motion Detectors

Pendant and button presses – allowing you to alert & speak with the warden.

Fall detectors - worn on the wrist or as a pendant, will trigger an alert if you have a serious fall.

You can wear these sensors on your wrist or as a pendant.  If you

Bed/chair occupancy system - monitoring when your bed/chair is occupied. Can be linked to wardens, onsite carers or even lamps & lights

Property exit sensor - detects when a front door (or any other exterior door) is left open for a certain period of time, alerting someone if you are outside alone.


Risk Detectors

Flood detector - detecting when a bath or sink overflows and causes flooding.

Smoke detector - will trigger an alert if it senses smoke and the warden will speak with you through the alarm.

Carbon monoxide detector - will detect carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas, which may be released by a faulty gas appliance.

Heat detector - will detect a rapid rise in temperature or  abnormally high temperature which might be caused by a pan left on the hob.

Gas solutions: There are two solutions if you leave your gas cooker unlit:

A manual gas valve for your carer to turn the gas on/off.

A gas detector that will turn off the gas if the cooker is left unlit. The warden or your designated responder/family member will visit to reset the gas shut off valve.


Additional sensors may also be available - this can be discussed during the assessment.

Receipt of the telecare package and support is subject to assessment and referral by Adult Social Services.


There may be a cost for your telecare package. This is set on an individual basis, dependant on your needs and means.


If you are not eligible for the service, but feel you need extra support to live independently at home the WATCH lifeline personal alarm is available to anyone resident in the Borough of Wandsworth.
