Vision

The Lighthouse welcomes with open arms people with mental health problems, past and present, and prays that they will meet with Jesus and be brought into His community. It also provides an environment for those not familiar with those suffering mental health problems to see how normal they are.

Mental health

Mental health can be defined as: “a state of well being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community” (World Health Organisation 2001).

Although mental health problems are very common – affecting around one in four people in Britain – stigma and discrimination towards people with mental health problems is still very common and there are a lot of myths about what different diagnoses mean. By mental health problems we are focusing on those with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, bipolar disorder (formerly known as manic depression), schizophrenia, personality disorders, eating disorders and many more.

Mental health problems can occur to anyone, it does not discriminate.

The approach

The approach of Lighthouse is to befriend those with mental health problems with a view to them coming to know Jesus who can bring peace, healing and a relationship with God.

Lighthouse provides a welcoming place to meet, with a meal (cost £3.50 or whatever you can afford) and some activities which people can take part in if they so wish. More importantly it provides an environment in which to relax and to relate to other people.

Lighthouse meets twice a month on a Thursday evening and is open to all.

Examples of activities we have done: Origami, Cooking (mainly baking), Make music, Classical singing, Elvis Priestly impersonator, Quizzes, Welsh night (Harp music), Floor scrabble, Poetry and prose, Barn dance, Indoor fireworks, Quilling, Card making, Play Stations, Making smoothies, Liquid nitrogen (making ice cream), Christmas/Easter services, Jewellery making, Painting banners, Games nights.
