Battersea Summer Scheme
Charity for the underprivileged young in Wandsworth
About Us

Battersea Summer Scheme aims to give under-privileged youngsters their first chance of a summer break. Since 1992 the Charity has organised exciting away days, or several nights away, from trips to the seaside (a first for some) to busy activity days – an alternative to ‘just hanging around’ and perhaps getting into trouble.

The activities are aimed to give opportunities to young people away from their usual environment.  They enjoy these new and diverse challenges which help them to develop better life skills and improve their self-esteem.

To achieve all this we work very closely with the leaders of local youth organisations, both voluntary and statutory, including Wandsworth Borough Council youth services and youth offending teams.

  • To reduce the likelihood of young people becoming victims of crime
  • To promote active citizenship
  • To divert young people from being involved in crime
  • To break down barriers, real or imagined, between Police, Communities and young people
  • To promote a philosophy of partnership within the community.
  • To encourage young people to participate in the day to day planning and evaluation of the activities
  • To provide all activities at a realistic and affordable price.
  • To focus on those young people most in need

Our Activities

Providing summer activities and opportunities for disadvantaged young people

FIVE-A-SIDE FOOTBALL COMPETITION.  This kicks off our programme of events and is held in Battersea Park in late spring.  It has become a successful and enjoyable fixture in the clubs’ football calendar with both boy and girl teams entering.  This competitive and entertaining day costs.

AWAY-DAYS.  Our young people go on fantastic adventures such as canoeing, mountain biking, sailing, climbing and team away-days in the beautiful countryside of Kent and Sussex.  There are also trips to the beach, to castles and fruit picking.  These are fun packed days with the challenge of working together in a new environment with professional supervision.  We provide all transport to & from the destination.

RESIDENTIAL COURSES.  For those with a real spirit of adventure there are challenging and exciting outward-bound-type residential courses.  A course consists of up to four nights and five days packed with a diverse range of challenging activities which includes full board, travel and expert supervision.  These courses really stretch the young people (and the staff!) both mentally and physically.

SPORT IN THE PARK.  Four days of lively and enjoyable activities in Battersea Park, where the young can try their hand at an array of sports and testing challenges such as the high rope and Army assault courses.  This is complemented by general entertainment, musical activities and a diverse range of workshops, some run by volunteers. Various local council bodies also provide community and careers advice.  Approximately 3,000 young people attend.

OTHER ACTIVITIES.  We are planning out of school workshops for cookery, photography, music, drama, sports, First Aid and others as requested.  They will be enjoyable activities and will lead to certificates of achievement which will be a valuable addition to a young person’s CV.
