Wandsworth Vision Support Service
Promoting visual access in education

WVSS is an outreach service working with children and young people in mainstream and special schools as well as with pre-school children in their homes.

We work closely with families as well as schools and other settings. Additionally we liaise with medical professionals. We ensure the children’s needs are met through inclusive and tailored teaching and learning approaches.

Our role is to support the development of children and young people with visual impairments and to ensure that they have good access to learning.

WVSS belongs to the family of providers that make up Wandsworth Sensory Support Services.

Our weekly playgroup is based at the Lodge Family Centre and offers a setting for young children and babies to experience specialist and individualised play experiences. Action songs and stories, messy play and activities that encourage social interaction and develop the children’s tactile awareness all feature regularly.

Playgroup also gives parents and carers the opportunity to meet each other, exchange ideas and talk about their experiences in a safe environment.

We benefit from being able to use some of Linden Lodge School’s specialist facilities. The sessions therefore include opportunities to relax or splash about in the hydrotherapy pool, to experience rebound therapy during movement sessions on the trampolines and enjoy some sensory stimulation in multi-sensory rooms. Use of dark room facilities provides crucial opportunities for visual stimulation and development. Our playgroup families have also been invited to some of the school’s special events, such as exploring a Colourscape Experience that created a multi-sensory environment of music, colour, light, movement and space, as well as met Father Christmas!

From time to time we invite specialists to join a session in order to deliver relevant training, for example on baby massage with bonding being a vital aspect of the development of all children, but often presents more of a challenge to achieve for children with a visual impairment.
