Sound Minds
the arts for mental health
Who we are

Sound Minds is a user led social enterprise improving people’s mental health and well being through the arts. The charity harnesses the power of creativity to help people to rebuild their confidence and gain the skills they need to lead fulfilled lives in their community.  The charity has music, visual art and filmmaking facilities and runs a timetable of arts projects and courses.

Sound Minds is wholly committed to combating the stigma attached to mental health issues. Our drama and music performances and other arts events provides us with opportunities to promote understanding.

What we do to help

Sound Minds success has only been possible because service users run the organisation. The majority of our staff, directors and volunteers originally came to receive the service they now help to provide.

Services are mostly provided from a large suite of rooms in the basement of Battersea Methodist Mission. Facilites include a spacious rehearsal room with en suite recording facility, a smaller studio for recording mixing and video editing, a visual art studio, lounge, kitchen and a newly refurbished teaching studio.

As well as the latest music making equipment we also have facilities for filmmaking and editing and a DJ set-up.

Sound Minds is home to a number of bands including Bluesology, and the legendary reggae band Channel One. Sound Minds is partners with the Battersea Jazz Workshop. Short courses are free (see below) These include accredited courses in music production and filmmaking and we also offer one to one lessons in drums, keyboards bass and guitar.

Sound Minds is also the base for BaME service user group Canerows who provide a mental health Ward Visiting service and peer support and consultation.

Canerows also offers Post Discharge Peer Support to Wandsworth residents leaving Ward 2 at Springfield Hospital and Mama Low's Kitchen, a one day per week drop in (free for Wandsworth residents to attend)
