Inventing the future of theatre

A true home for the local community...

Described as ‘Britain’s most influential theatre’ (The Guardian), at the heart of our mission is a process called Scratch, that places the artist and audience in a creative dialogue to develop new ideas.

We deliver an extensive programme of activity each year that attracts over 220,000 visits by 100,000 people for theatre productions and participatory workshops, weddings, tea dances, community support groups and corporate events. Our theatre and participation work engages over 400 artists each year to develop new forms of theatre and connect with audiences and participants, including over 3,000 local children, young people and older people through tailored learning activities. Since 2007, we have set about restoring and redeveloping the Grade II* listed building to create greater access and use by our audiences.

The Town Hall also continues to be a true home for the local community. We have a dedicated free space, The Bees Knees, open daily, and designed specifically, for 0-5 year olds. We provide a central hub for community workshops, advice sessions and events covering education, domestic violence, family care, social and physical wellbeing, working alongside over 100 local organizations and partners each year. We also have a vibrant café bar space which is frequented by local people, artists, staff, businesses and all of our other audiences.

People get creative here, get married here, vote here, celebrate their birthdays here , hang out in the cafe, play with their kids, attend memorial services, and see great theatre. Come and see us soon
